A millennial couple with a baby on the way purchased a traditional 1970’s tri-level home in the family-friendly neighborhood of Education Hill in Redmond, Washington. The move from their airy newly renovated West Seattle bungalow to a gloomy compartmentalized environment was non-functional for this couple that holds a generational love for midcentury modern design. Modeling after their bungalow and fervent desire for an open floor plan with clean lines and gentle organic curves, the design plan for the 1,976 square foot home was born.

The plan initiated with the removal of all non-weight bearing walls in the home’s entry-level to create an inviting and bright floor plan sprinkled with skylights and sleek lines. The creation of the open floor plan remodel included a complete reconfiguration of kitchen, entry closet and new cabinets that featured hidden coat storage disguised as part of the kitchen cabinets. Forming the centerpiece of the kitchen and dining area, the island features elements such as a walnut wood base with natural white Quartzite stone counter, stovetop, and a juxtaposed floating Quartz countertop with white washable Durasuede bar stools and bright dropdown glass fixtures and coordinated Quartz countertops compliment the modern gray designed backsplash, creating a tidy yet inviting cooking and dining haven.

A robust vinyl plank wood floor that emulates a hickory feel was installed throughout the home for an overall clean yet modern atmosphere. The upper and lower levels of the home followed the unique midcentury modern design with the addition of skylights for brightness, stainless steel fixtures, and glass lighting throughout. The completion formed a home that catered to the needs of this new family in a fashionable and uncluttered way. The complete home remodel included several stages; the main focus of photography included the main level living renovation.

I highly recommend Diana Cutler with DC Designs. My partner and I have worked with Diana on the remodel of two kitchens, and both times she perfectly captured our vision and the functionalities to best meet our family’s needs. Throughout both projects, Diana was professional; consistent in her communication, timely in deliverables, and an excellent listener.
